'Worst nightmare' as six-month-old baby dies after becoming wedged face down on sofa in llkeston

A six-month-old baby girl collapsed and died after being wedged face down on a sofa.

Indie-Vogue Hodges was taken to Queen's Medical Centre after the incident occurred in her Ilkeston home.

An inquest into her death has now been opened and Indie-Vogue's grandmother has described the death as her 'worst nightmare'.

Born on March 12 to parents Matthew Hodges and Claire Barker, the six-month-old died in the early hours of Friday, September 13, DerbyshireLive reports.

The inquest was told that Indie-Vogue became wedged face-down on the sofa at the family home on Spinney Road.

She was taken to the Queen's Medical Centre, in Nottingham, where her father formally identified her.

Her death was reported by Detective Inspector Paul Bullock on the same day.

The provisional postmortem report stated the cause of death as "anoxic brain injury" which occurs when the brain is starved of oxygen.

Reading from the provisional postmortem report, Dr Hunter, senior coroner at Derby and Derbyshire Coroner's Court, said: "Indie-Vogue collapsed after becoming wedged face down on a settee.

"The final cause of death is pending results of further tests."

Dr Hunter added that he anticipated the full inquest into Indie-Vogue's death to take place in "several months" time.

The young girl's grandmother, Lorraine Hodges, today paid tribute to her granddaughter saying it was their "worst nightmare."

"It's a waste of a life, it should never have happened. It's one of my grandchildren that I'll never see grow up," she said.

"We've had a life stolen and we'll never get it back. It's something you hear about on the news, it's not something that happens to people like us.

"But we are a close family so when one's up and one's down we support each other."
