Worst jobs for car insurance costs - from footballers to minimum wage workers

Footballers pay the most for their car insurance of any profession - at £1,978 a year on average - but there is good news for exam invigilators.

An analysis of 7 million car insurance searches by MoneySuperMarket found this group had the cheapest quotes of all - working out at just £252 a year on average.

After footballers, sportspeople (£1,511) and fast food delivery drivers (£1,291) paid the most on average for cover.

At the other end of the scale, newspaper delivery drivers (£268) and retired people (£270) pay the least after invigilators.

MoneySuperMarket's Rachel Wait said: “Our research shows that footballers have the highest insurance premiums, which is to be expected, given they often drive very expensive cars.

“However, it is surprising to see the high rates paid by more ‘everyday’ professions – such as delivery drivers and car wash attendants."

Who's paying the most to insure their cars:

  • Footballers  - £1,978 a year
  • Sportspeople - £1,511 a year
  • Fast food delivery drivers - £1,291 a year
  • Scrap dealers - £1,286 a year
  • Apprentices - £1,243 a year

Who's paying the least to insure their car:

  • Invigilators - £252 a year
  • Newspaper delivery drivers - £268 a year
  • Retired - £270 a year
  • Curtain makers - £278 a year
  • Janitors - £283) a year

The good news is that the changing costs based on on what you do for a living means you might be able to cut your own bill by tweaking your job title.

For example, the average quote for a construction worker is £903 a year, but if you can could legitimately describe yourself as a yard manager you'd pay £529 a year on average, while stonemasons (£606 a year) and building contractor (£651 a year) also pay less.

But it's worth noting that you have to make sure you actually do the other job - as lying about your profession could see your claim invalidated.

"Insurance companies keep massive amounts of information on the claims they’ve paid in the past, which then influences the way they calculate a premium," Wait said.

"As a result, some professions are seen as more of a risk and can be charged more.

“That being said, if you’re in one of these job roles, don’t panic. There are still ways to make savings on your car insurance, such as shopping around at the point of renewal.

"Doing so can save you up to £250.”
