Worrying new figures show grim reality of UK coronavirus deaths

New figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) have revealed the true shocking numbers for the amount of people dying in the UK - including thousands in care homes.

The ONS has released its latest data for the one week period between April 10 and 17 - and it is harrowing.

In that week, the provisional number of deaths in England and Wales during that week was 22,351.

This represents an increase of 3,835 deaths registered compared with the previous week and 11,854 more than the five-year average.

The number also represents the highest weekly total recorded since figures started being recorded all the way back in 1993.

The ONS data also spells out the grim picture taking place in the nation's care homes.

The organisation said that there were 4,343 deaths of those with coronavirus in English care homes just in the period between April 10 and 24.

Overall, it is predicted at least 5,500 people with Covid-19 have died in care homes.

The ONS figures give a much more fulsome and worrying indication of the true nature of how many people are dying during the coronavirus pandemic.

There have been concerns for some time that the official government numbers released each day to not give anything like a full picture of the crisis.

This is because a lack of mass testing has meant that it is largely only those who have gone into hospital who have been tested and thus recorded in those daily updates.

Care homes now appear to be the frontline of the coronavirus fight.

While deaths in hospitals have been falling in recent days, it would appear that tragedies in care homes are only peaking now - meaning there could be much more pain to come.

The grim situation facing care homes has been brought to light at a number of facilities in Liverpool.

The Oak Springs care home in Wavertree has to call for urgent help after an outbreak of Covid-19 last month, with at least 16 residents having now died at the home.

Nine residents have died at the Beechwood Services care home in Aigburth - while at least eight people have died at the Green Heys Care Home in Crosby have also sadly died.
