Worried spectators tell how two men plunged from cherry picker at Hamilton Park

Concerned spectators at Hamilton Park Racecourse have told how two men plummeted from a cherry picker before crowds were ushered out of the grounds.

One man was rushed to Wishaw General Hospital, while the other was treated by paramedics at the scene.

Reportedly, the two camera operators were setting up prior to the first scheduled race at 2.15pm. One of them is said to have began falling when the other "tried to save him" and fell too.

An eyewitness told us: “I was in there 45 minutes before the race was even due to start and they announced the race was delayed at 1.45pm and all they told us was there was an incident on the racecourse.

“I was out at the racecourse and the only person I could see was the guy down at the five furlongs stand.

“It seemed to be something beyond the finishing line and someone has fell from a cherry picker, somebody tried to save him and he’s fell too.

“As long as nobody‘s lost their life we can live without the races being on today.”

Today's race card was abandoned as worried spectators were seen flocking out of the venue in Hamilton.

One of them explained: "Two cameramen fell of the cherry picker, and one was taken away quite quickly.

"The other man was still in the harness and they had to try and get him down, and the camera was there dangling too."

Emergency services rushed to the scene as two fire trucks were seen on the course, along with paramedics and police.

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesperson told Lanarkshire Live: “We received a call at 13:38hrs this afternoon to attend an incident at Hamilton Racecourse. Two ambulances and two rapid response vehicles were dispatched to the scene.”

And a Police Scotland spokesperson said earlier this afternoon: “Around 1.50pm on Tuesday, 29 June, police were called to a report of two men falling from a mobile platform at Hamilton Race Course.

"Emergency services are in attendance and one man has been taken to Wishaw General Hospital for treatment.

"The second man is currently being treated at the scene. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.”

The majority of spectators were seen exiting Hamilton Park shortly after some emergency service vehicles had cleared the scene.

A Hamilton Park spokesperson said: "Unfortunately racing today has been abandoned due to an accident involving camera crew at the course.

"Ticket holders will be contacted with regards to transfer of ticket or refund. Sending our thoughts and very best wishes to all involved."
