Worried about planned A1 roadworks in Gateshead? Now you can have your say

Do you want to have your say on plans for major A1 roadworks in Gateshead? Now's your chance.

Highways England have lodged plans to overhaul the road around the Coal House roundabout near Birtley and the Team Valley.

The scheme is slated to start in 2020 and will cost between £250m and £350m.

Around two-and-a-half miles of road will be widened to add capacity and reduce congestion between junction 65 and 67.

The scheme will also include the replacement of Allerdene Railway Bridge.

As previously reported, plans to improve the dual carriageway had been due to take place this year but work was delayed when resources were focused on upgrading the A19 around Sunderland.

Members of the public are being invited to have their say on the plans and can raise objections.

Sarah Richards, chief executive of The Planning Inspectorate, said: “This is an opportunity for people to play a part in the planning process and influence the outcome.

"We encourage people to get involved by registering as an interested party. By doing so, people will be able to participate fully in the examination of this proposal”.

The public and those interested in the proposal can register with the Planning Inspectorate until Thursday, November 14, 2019 at 23:59.
