Worle nursery struck by lightning in huge storm which caused flash flooding

A nursery has been struck by lightning in North Somerset during a huge storm.

The incident happened shortly after 6pm at the Ready Steady Go Day Care Nursery on Mendip Avenue.

It is not yet clear if anyone has been injured in the incident.

The road was closed for a time and firefighters and ambulance crews were called to the scene.

The roof has been severely damaged as a result of the lightning strike.

Emily Larner-Main who lives nearby explained how she saw tiles fly into the air and damage cars parked on the street below.

She added: "Thank goodness the nursery shut 10 mins prior to the incident.

"Just hope everyone's okay."

Streets across Worle and Weston-super-Mare as well as other areas of North Somerset, were left underwater after torrential downpours.

Homes were also left without power.

The Met Office weather warning remains in place until 11pm on Friday, July 7.

The yellow warning for thunderstorms warns of flooding to homes, businesses, and roads as well as travel disruption and powercuts.

Bristol Live is awaiting further information from Avon Fire and Rescue Service and South Western Ambulance Service.
