Supermarkets are running out of ibuprofen as worldwide shortage continues

Shoppers are struggling to find ibuprofen as they are confronted with empty shelves at the supermarket.

Customers of Tesco, Morrisons and Sainsbury’s have reported problems - with some told it could be weeks before new stock arrives.

There are even reports pharmacists are running low.

The news follows warnings late last year that there was a global shortage of the  drug's key active ingredient.

One shopper tweeted: "Went to buy ibuprofen on my way back... and there wasn’t any except the v expensive liquid capsules.

"I just want standard pills. Phramacist said there’s a national shortage, no idea when it’ll be in stock. Brexit? Have you taken the ibuprofen?"

Another wrote: "This medicine shortage appears to be a thing still. No ibuprofen at Sainsbury's"

A Morrisons customer added: “Been in two Morrisons and shelves are empty in both. No medicines.

"Got a poorly 14 month old and can’t find any Calpol or own brand paracetamol or ibuprofen for children. It’s constantly poor. What’s going on?”

It's affecting Tesco too, with one customer recently writing: “Is there a ibuprofen shortage in the UK? Been to 3 major supermarkets this week and the shelves are empty ... local Tesco advises not in stock until 24th!!! Sort your supply chains out guys.”

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson told The Sun: “Some stores are running low on some own brand ibuprofen lines but customers can continue to choose from a range of branded alternatives. We’re working to replenish as quickly as possible and are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.”

A spokeswoman for Tesco added: "There is currently a global shortage of API, the active ingredient of ibuprofen, which is affecting the whole market. We are working with our suppliers to manage this."

A Morrisons spokeswoman said the company had a "good" supply of ibuprofen.
