New Year 2022 celebrations from around the world as fireworks and parties take place

People across the world have welcomed in 2022 with fireworks and celebrations.

The bells have struck midnight in much of the planet with billions of people celebrating the new year.

But for millions celebrations have been tempered with the coronavirus pandemic still sweeping the globe.

Many restrictions are in place in various countries against large scale gatherings and drinking in large groups.

With the first cases reported back in 2019, the virus has been something the world has had to learn to live with for more than two years.

The bells first started striking in Australia and New Zealand with Australia was one of the few countries to ring in 2022 in style after declaring itself past the worst of the Omicron wave.

Fireworks over Sydney Harbour went ahead as planned with a spectacular show.

Huge displays lit up skies in Asia also with the Thai capital of Bangkok and the Chinese city of Yantai welcoming the new year.

Europe has also started celebrating with parties across the continent.

And towering buildings across the Middle East have also staged massive fireworks. displays with jaw-dropping sights in Dubai, UAE.

Back home in Scotland it was a scaled back Hogmanay with large scale public gatherings cancelled and nightclubs closed amid a surge in coronavirus cases.

House parties were still held and pubs opened, but the Scottish Government advised against any big groups meeting.

In the Americas, the bells are yet to strike but preparations for the big event are already underway.

In Ecuador in South America, locals have been buying up huge 'dummies' in the form of politicians and pop culture figures like Star Wars Stormtroopers and even characters from Squid Game which are then burnt as part of their tradition.
