World War II era artillery shell discovered in Dublin man's back garden as bomb squad flood North Strand

A World War II artillery shell was made safe and removed by the army bomb squad after being dug up in a Dublin man's back garden.

North Strand resident Ben Lavelle became aware of his home nightmare when a construction worker dug up the suspect bomb in his back garden just after 4pm on Tuesday.

The bomb disposal unit were immediately called in to inspect the Nottingham Street area which was sealed off by Gardai and the Army while they dealt with the package.

Shocked Ben told Dublin Live at the scene: "A construction worker found the device when digging in the back garden.

"It's about eight inches long, metal and covered in clay."

The specialist team left the scene with the shell just after 7pm after making sure the device was safe to be removed.

A military spokesperson told Dublin Live: "This afternoon, following a request from An Garda Síochána, an Army Bomb Disposal Team was tasked to investigate an item found in Nottingham Street, Ballybough, Dublin 3.

"The team arrived at the scene at approximately 5.00pm.

"On arrival a cordon was established and maintained for the duration of the operation.

"A historical World War 2 era artillery shell was identified, made safe and removed for disposal elsewhere.

"The team departed the scene just after 7.00pm.

"Should members of the public encounter suspicious items, or hazardous substances, they are advised to maintain a safe distance and inform An Garda Síochána."
