World War II era artillery shell discovered during a demolition at Merewether

Construction workers demolishing a house at Merewether were surprised on Tuesday when they uncovered an artillery shell believed to be from the time of the second World War.

Police officers attached to the Newcastle Newcastle Police District were called to the property around 10am where the 25 pound shell was discovered.

It was not confirmed at the scene whether the shell was live or not, police said in a Facebook post on Tuesday afternoon.

A staff officer from RAAF Base Williamtown was called to the property a short time later and removed the shell without incident.
