World War 2 medals stolen from sheltered accommodation returned

A man left 'heartbroken' after someone broke into his home and stole his dad's war medals has had them returned, police have confirmed.

Merseyside Police issued images of the stolen World War II medals on June 23 as they hunted for the "callous" culprit who struck in Toxteth.

The burglar helped themselves to the "priceless" medals belonging to the elderly victim's father after gaining access to the sheltered accommodation on Handel Court in Lodge Lane.

The raider was thought to have stolen the medals some time between midday and 2pm on Friday, June 18.

Now, police have confirmed the medals have been anonymously returned to the victim, but they are still working to figure out who took them.

The burglary "sickened police" who urged the public to "do the right thing" and help find the person responsible.

Inspector Gavin Mulcahy said: “For such priceless sentimental items to be stolen was extremely upsetting for the victim, and it is hard to imagine how someone could be so callous to try to profit from the bravery and heroism of others.

“If you live locally and saw or heard anything suspicious around the time of the burglary, let us know and we will take action. A small piece of information could be vital in finding the person responsible and putting them before the courts.”

Police say people can contact its social media desk via Twitter @MerPolCC or Facebook Merseyside Police CC with reference 21000428850. Always call 999 if a crime is in progress.
