World snooker champion Mark Williams rushed to hospital while defending title

World snooker champion Mark Williams has been hospitalised with chest pains after the opening session of his World Championship game at the crucible.

Williams went to A&E after his second-round session against David Gilbert, who he is currently trailing 5-3.

The 44-year-old felt unwell following the session and was advised by a venue doctor to get himself down to the hospital.

The Welshman travelled to the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield with wife Jo and son Kian Williams.

He tweeted: "A&E. Could be hear a while, couldn't stick the chest pains no more. Lucky there wasn't any more frames to play."

He later added: "Doctors are confident it's not anything to do with my heart. Awaiting more tests at 10 o'clock, can't wait for my bed."

Williams fell behind against Gilbert as breaks of 61, 61, 52 and 88 saw the 37-year-old claim an early advantage.

Their last-16 match is due to resume at 10am on Saturday at the Crucible.

Neil Robertson has sent his well-wishes to Williams following him being sent to hospital.

"I really hope Mark is okay, the most important thing is his health but you know he won't want to withdraw from this tournament," said the world number four.

"I played really well tonight to finish off the match. I am just playing with freedom though the competitor keeps you wanting to win.

"If I can win the tournament, I go to world No1 as well."
