Postgame
Alex Cora pushes every right button, which cannot be said for Dave Roberts.
Yes, the Sox retired 16 straight Dodgers to end this game, but LA were up in this one.
In a key fifth inning moment, Roberts lifted his starter on 69 pitches, in favor of a reliever who had a five plus ERA this season, and who had given up the lead on the previous night. It did not work out. Not even close.
Yes, Roberts will have a lot to answer for.
But don’t take anything away from Price and the bullpen, they were masterful.
And then there’s the offense, which are relentless with two outs, using that magic once again to beat their playoff opponent.
The good news for LA? You’re not in trouble until you lose a home game.
We’ll be back on Friday night for Game 3 from Los Angeles, but for now, thanks for reading, and wherever you are, good morning, good afternoon and good night.

Here’s Craig Kimbrel, who looks like he’s trying to pull satan out of his opponent every time he throws from the windup.
Machado skies to right and that’s one out.
Fourteen Dodgers have been retired, in a. row, which is a lot.
Now it’s Taylor who is set to be exorcised.

Three outs left for the Dodgers.

Martinez lifts a fly ball to center field but Bellinger is running to his right and makes a tremendous sliding catch on his knees.
Fabulous defense there from LA.
Now Bogaerts flies to CF, and this is considerably easier.

Pederson pops to left, inning over.
For the record, Freese was 1-2 with a walk tonight, and tonight, the Dodgers have only three hits.
Last night he was 2-3.
Great move.

Turner grounds out.
Joc Pederson pinch hits for Freese, who is one of themost productive hitters for LA.

It’s a 99mph heater that swooshes past Bellinger. One down.
Remember relievers who weren’t closers threw 90 if they were lucky? I know Eovaldi isn’t a reliever, but you get my point, don’t you?
Dodgers 2-4 Red Sox, top 8th
Eovaldi is in, and he may start a game in LA. Cora doesn’t care, he just pushes all the right buttons. It’s a new era, and it’s working out better for some...
1-2 to Bellinger.
Willsie Scott says:
“Dodgers manager makes same mistake twice. Dodgers pitcher Madison duplicates what he did last night. Gives up lead again.”
That is correct. It has to be frustrating if you’re a Dodgers fan.
Dodgers 2-4 Red Sox, bottom 7th
Betts is running on a ball in the dirt! Aggressive base running by Boston who do everything right.
So man on third before Alexander gets Moreland to strikeout.
Inning over. Here comes the top of the Dodger order in the eighth.

And waiting. And waiting...it’s off the wall!
It’s a double for Betts on a ball that bounces off the moon.
That’s a runner in scoring position, but don’t worry Dodgers fans, there’s only one out.
Here’s Benintendi.
Dodgers 2-4 Red Sox, bottom 7th
Vazquez, who started it all with two outs in the sixth inning, is at the plate facing new Dodgers pitcher Kenta Maeda.
The count is full: a ground ball sends Muncy to his left, he’s got it, and he fires over to the first for the first out.

And by the way...
...that is why the Dodgers absolutely have to deliver with runners on the corners and two down in the fourth. You need to convert chances against these monsters. Two runs that inning was not nearly enough.
Kemp is retired, 5-3.

Dodgers 2-4 Red Sox, top 6th
Machado pops to left, Taylor lays down a bunt, which is gobbled up by Devers at third and handled for the second out.
Two down. It’s left for Kemp.

So Roberts brings in a washed up reliever with multiple surgery scars, with a five plus ERA who pitched yesterday in favor of Ryu who was basically awesome tonight and was on 69 pitches.
If you’re gonna make a move, why not Baez, who was removed last night after dealing in favor of Wood who gave up a three-run home run?
Bogaerts strikes out. Inning over.

That means there’s a runner in scoring position which is the worst possible situation for LA.
Visit to the mound as Ryan Madson warms in the LA pen.

The shift is on for Bradley Jr. It isn’t necessary: Machado is under it at short, and that’s out no2.
Ryu is cruising: he’s thrown just 54 pitches.
That means Roberts is on the top step waiting to come get’em, obviously.

Price, bearded and looking like a very bad man indeed, throws a fastball away to the right handed Hernandez, leveling the count at 2-2.
Now he’s set, and bounces a ball in the dirt to run the count full.
Hernandez then pokes a harmless fly ball into right center field: it’s easy for Bradley Jr, and it’s two scoreless innings in the books for Price.

“This to me is the most important game (apart from game 7) in any World Series, if the Red Sox win tonight they know they don’t have to come back home to win the whole thing and the Dodgers know the will have to come back here to Fenway to win the Series. It really is a must win for the Blue Crew.”
Well, the Sox could lose tonight and then sweep the three games in LA, but I know what you’re saying. It is a vital game for LA, of course.

David Price
Last time Price took to the mound, he shredded Houston in what was something of a re-coming out game for the veteran hurler.
Price allowed just three hits in six shutout innings while striking out nine Astros. However, he also has a postseason ERA of over five, in over 20 appearances, which is no small sample.
Which Price will we get tonight?
Ryu
Tonight it’s Hyun-jin Ryu for LA: he needs to be great tonight. He needs to be the savior.
Ryu was incredible in the regular season with a sub 2.00 ERA, and kept rolling in the postseason with seven shutout innings and eight strikeouts v Atlanta at home.
He did run into trouble against Milwaukee with two rocky road starts in the NLCS, which is why Dodgers fans are concerned about the lefty whose ERA jumped to over seven in that series.
Perhaps Dave Roberts and upper management might have considered keeping Ryu for the games in LA?
Then there’s this:
“Boston are 15-5 in Fenway Park in the regular season and postseason when opponents start a lefty. How does that bode for the left-handed Ryu?”
Yeah...I’d of started him out west.
Hola
Hello and welcome to our coverage of Game 2 of the 114th World Series.
We’re mighty pleased to have you along with us in what is a crucial game for Los Angeles as they try to shut down the Red Sox lineup and head west with the Fall Classic tied.
Last night was a strange game in the sense that it was a one-run ballgame up until Eduardo Nunez blew it open with his pinch-hit home run in the seventh inning. Even before the blast, the one-run deficit, at least to me, felt like a lot more. Boston, capable of hanging crooked numbers at any point, always seemed in control, even as Sale teetered and LA threatened.
Had the Dodgers found a way to pull off Game 1, it would have been the definition of stealing a game on the road. Unfortunately for Dodgers fans, it didn’t happen on a night where their ace Clayton Kershaw just didn’t have it.
Then again, who has it against the Boston Beasts? Perhaps Dodgers starter Hyun-jin Ryu has the answer?
We’ll have more for you before first pitch, but until then, kick back and get set for what should be a compelling second World Series game.
Oh, and I should mention that I would love to have your predictions. Tweet @lengeldavid or via email at david.lengel@theguardian.com
Whatever happens over the next week on the field, I think we can all agree this has been an excellent series for light refraction. We had some great rainbows over Fenway Park yesterday and nature has followed up with a double effort today:

David will be here shortly, in the meantime here’s a recap of last night’s game:
Fenway Park proved too tricky, too cold and just too much for the Dodgers in the World Series opener. Andrew Benintendi, JD Martinez and the Boston Red Sox came out swinging, seizing every advantage in their quirky ballpark to beat Los Angeles 8-4 on a chilly, windy Tuesday night.
Benintendi delivered four hits, Martinez drove in two early runs and pinch-hitter Eduardo Nunez golfed a three-run homer to seal it. “Up and down the lineup there’s not an easy out. We’re going to grind out at-bats,” Benintendi said after the game. The 108-win Red Sox got a strong effort from their bullpen after an expected duel between aces Chris Sale and Clayton Kershaw failed to ignite.
