'World's weirdest aircraft' makes surprise stop off at Shannon Airport

An Irish airport got a visit from a very strange aircraft shaped like an adorable sea creature today.

While airports are often welcome an array of planes on any given day this latest visitor is definitely the weirdest craft seen on the runway in a long time.

Shannon Airport took to social media to share a snap of the so-called Airbus Beluga plane which was parked up on one of the runways.

The plane has aptly earned its name as it is shaped and painted to look like a Beluga whale.

Sharing the picture on Twitter the airport wrote: "Well hello there!

"What a surprise this afternoon to welcome what some might say (and we're not naming any names) is the "worlds weirdest aircraft" to Shannon Airport!

They added: "'Weird' doesn't seem right...we think Absolutely Adorable fits better. What do you think?"

The Airbus A300-600ST , or Beluga, is a version of the standard A300-600 wide-body airliner modified to carry aircraft parts and outsize cargo.

It received the official name of Super Transporter early on however, the name Beluga given because of the airliner's look gained popularity and has since been officially adopted.

This is not the first time a strange plane has made a stop off at an Irish airport.

In February this year the world famous WWE plane passed through Dublin before jetting off to Saudi Arabia for an event.
