World’s smallest QR code created in major data breakthrough

  • Scientists at Vienna University of Technology have created a QR code smaller than most bacteria, capable of storing data for centuries.
  • The minuscule QR code, measuring just 1.98 square micrometres, was engraved onto a special ceramic using beams of charged particles.
  • Officially recognised by Guinness World Records, the code is so small it can only be viewed under an electron microscope.
  • This ceramic-based storage offers exceptional durability, retaining information for hundreds of years without requiring power or maintenance, unlike current digital storage methods.
  • Researchers aim to scale up the technology for industrial applications, potentially allowing over two terabytes of data to be stored on an A4-sized area.
