World's richest footballer who spent time at Arsenal and Chelsea's academy released aged 23

The world's richest footballer, Faiq Bolkiah, who dreams of one day making it as a big time professional footballer, has had his career hopes dented after being released from his current side.

The 23-year-old, who was signed up by Southampton's academy after spells at Arsenal and Chelsea, eventually signed a three-year professional contract with Leicester City.

Nevertheless, Bolikah was surplus to requirements at the Foxes and was released by the club last summer after failing to make a single appearance for the club.

He later joined Madeiran outfit Martimo, but his hopes of a big break were shattered on Tuesday when his contract with the top-flight Portuguese side was rescinded.

The club, who are currently in 15th place out of 18 in Portugal’s Primera Liga, said in a statement on its website, via the Daily Star: “We have reached an agreement with the player Faiq Bolkiah to rescind his contract.

“We thank the player for the effort and dedication he has shown in service of our club, and sincerely wish him professional and personal happiness.”

Martimo didn't offer any reason for the move, which came after the Los Angeles-born player failed to make a single appearance for the senior side.

The nephew of the Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah, who is reportedly worth a whopping £16billion, was labelled as the richest footballer in the world after his attempts to make it in football became public earlier this year.

His father Jefri is the brother of oil tycoon Hassanal, making the youngster a member of Brunei’s royal family and one of the heirs to the sultan’s fortune.

He is yet to make an official statement on whether he will continue playing or pursue an alternative career.
