The world’s oldest gorilla just celebrated her birthday and her keepers decided to commemorate the momentous occasion in style.
Fatou celebrated turned 63 in her home in Berlin Zoological Garden on Tuesday and she is believed to be the oldest gorilla in captivity.
In footage shared by the zoo, Fatou’s curiosity can be seen in action as plays with her birthday treat before eating it.
The zoo provided Fatou with a generous helping of eggs and fruit as she enjoyed her feast at her favourite spot in the park.
Fatou is not only the oldest living gorilla but she is also the oldest animal living at the Berlin zoo where she has spent most of her life.
She reportedly arrived at Berlin Zoo via Marseille after she was traded at the age of two by a French sailor in payment for his bar tab, back in the 1950s.
Gorillas, who usually live up to 40-50 years in the wild, are listed as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
Poaching and diseases such as Ebola are said to be the main cause for the decline in numbers.
