'World’s largest facilitator of child abuse images' Eric Eoin Marques jailed for 27 years in US

A Dubliner described as the world’s largest facilitator of child abuse images was sentenced to 27 years in prison on Wednesday by a US court.

New York born Eric Eoin Marques, 36, was extradited to the US in 2019 following his initial arrest in Dublin in 2013.

Mr Marques had waged a lengthy six-year legal battle in Ireland to prevent being sent to America to face charges.

He had been described by the FBI as the "world's largest facilitator of child abuse imagery".

Marques, who has both Irish and American citizenship, operated a dark web host allowing more than 100 sites to show the rape and torture of children from his father's one bedroom flat in Dublin.

His network contained more than 8.5 million images of child abuse, according to prosecutors.

The judge agreed to recommend that the eight years Marques has already served in custody in Ireland and the US since 2013 should be given as credit to him by the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
