World’s first vegan-friendly lawyer’s wig made from hemp instead of horsehair showcased by animal-loving barrister

A vegan-friendly lawyer’s wig made from 100% hemp instead of horsehair has been showcased for the very first time.

Pupil barrister Samuel March modelled the ‘prototype’ and shared pictures of the head covering on Twitter.

The artificial cloth, believed to be the first of its kind in the world, was designed and manufactured by Cultiva Kingdom who are based in Oxford.

It is now set to go into mass production for legal professionals preferring a more animal-friendly wig for use in courts across the country.

Mr March, who works at 5 Paper Buildings, tweeted: “The prototype has arrived. This is the world’s first hemp barrister’s wig. 0% horsehair, 100% vegan friendly.

“What do we think? Will it pass in court?”

Miranda Moore QC, joint head of chambers at 5 Paper Buildings, told The Telegraph: “Sam is fully supported by Chambers, as I made clear to him when he first mentioned the idea to me some months ago.

“I am generally supportive of the practice of wearing wigs, but consider that appropriate court attire should be inclusive and what it is made out of is immaterial.

“People should be able to express themselves in line with their values, whether that means a Sikh being able to wear a turban instead of a wig or a vegan going out and sourcing something suitable.”
