World's biggest passenger aircraft aborts landing at Manchester Airport amid high winds

An Airbus A380 superjumbo aborted a landing as strong winds battered Manchester Airport yesterday morning.

The world's biggest passenger aircraft, which can hold over 500 passengers, initiated a 'go around' as pilots tackled 40mph winds as they approached the runway.

The Emirates flight was seen to rise back up into the sky rather than touch down onto the tarmac in the early hours of Tuesday morning due to crosswinds.

It performed a lap before touching down on the second attempt.

A 'go around' can either be initiated by the pilot flying or requested by air traffic control for various reasons, such as an unstable approach or an obstruction on the runway.

It was one of several flights whose pilots had to battle the conditions, where winds reached 23 knots and were gusting over 35mph.

In footage filmed by Aviation UpClose, a wobbly Ethiopian Airliines Boeing 787 as well as British Airways and KLM flights were seen rocking from side to side as they approached the runway.

Trainee pilot Matt Jones, 18, who filmed the incredible footage said: "I've developed a bit of an interest in watching aircraft landing in challenging conditions over the past few years.

"It really brings out the best in piloting and you really have to give them credit! Winds were out of the North West this morning blowing around 40mph.

"So it was really quite impressive seeing some of the crosswind landings.

"I wasn't expecting the A380 to go around whatsoever, but it just seems they were unlucky with a sudden gust.

"It has to be one of the best moments I've ever had while spotting aircraft."
