Backpacking, whether for a few weeks or a few months, is a British rite of passage – but there are a number of things to think about before choosing where to go.
Budget, safety and access to internet are among the top things backpackers need to consider and this is why the team at Globehunters has named Finland as the world’s best backpacking destination.
Globehunters determined the list by taking happiness levels of the country from the World Happiness Index into account, alongside safety scores from the Peace Index, internet scores from the Inclusive Internet Index and the cost of living was determined from Numbeo’s Cost of Living Index.
Scandinavian nations dominated the top five places to backpack, with Denmark and Sweden in second and fifth place, joining Finland at number one. Canada and Czech Republic rounded off the top five in spots three and four.
The Netherlands, Austria, United Arab Emirates, Australia and Singapore complete the top 10.

The UK was placed at number 14 on the list, with lower markings for cost of living and safety compared to those in the top 10.
Backpackers looking for a cheap trip can head to Pakistan, Tunisia and India and those who want to head to the safest countries should seek out Singapore, Switzerland and Japan.
