World Rugby issue statement on Rob Howley alleged betting scandal

World Rugby have this morning issued a statement supporting the WRU's move to send Rob Howley home from the World Cup for a potential breach of betting rules.

Howley is back in Wales after being forced to leave the tournament in Japan before the stunning news broke on Tuesday.

He will now assist an investigation into the allegations, which Warren Gatland only became aware of this week. Howley is being replaced by Stephen Jones, who is already set to take on the role full-time after the World Cup.

World Rugby have now confirmed they are in contact with the WRU over the matter. The WRU had previously issued their own statement, which you can find here.

The World Rugby statement read: "World Rugby has been informed by the Welsh Rugby Union of a potential breach of World Rugby Regulation 6 (specifically betting on rugby) by a member of the union’s RWC 2019 coaching team.

“World Rugby fully supports the WRU’s proactive approach to this matter and can confirm that the union is keeping us informed of their initial discussions.

“It would be inappropriate to comment further on an open and evolving process.”

Wales are holding a press conference at 5am UK time when further details are expected to emerge. You can follow that live here.
