World Rally Champions is coming to Liverpool for the first time in its history

For the first time since 1999, Britain's round of the FIA World Rally Championship will start outside Wales and instead will kick off right here in Liverpool.

Liverpool has never hosted the event's 'grand depart' Ceremonial Start before so fans of the sport are sure to flock to the city centre to see it commence outside our iconic Royal Liver Building on Thursday, October 3 from 3pm.

There will be 75 cars in total, including drivers and crew, contesting the 2019 Wales Rally BG.

Regarding Liverpool hosting the start of the event, former World Rally Championship winning co-driver David Richards said: "I grew up alongside one of the forests so, for me, Wales is the home of rallying in Great Britain.

"That said, I’m every bit as excited about the Ceremonial Start coming here to Liverpool – in a way, it’s another homecoming for me as I used to come here every day for work as a teenager.

"There’s a great feeling about the city and I can’t wait for the World Championship to come here – they will really appreciate having the start right in the heart of this wonderful city before they all head off to Oulton Park and the Welsh forests."

Public admission will be free and a big screen featuring interviews with all the top competitors will be on display at the Pier Head.
