World Pipe Band Championships 2021 at Glasgow Green cancelled due to covid

The greatest pipe band competition in the world, annually hosted at Glasgow Green, has been cancelled for a second year in a row.

In an announcement by Glasgow Life today, the event has been called off due to the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Every year hundreds of pipers descend onto Glasgow’s biggest public park to battle it out for the title of World Champions.

This competition was the pinnacle of the piping calendar, welcoming the best pipers and drummers to Glasgow in a spectacular cultural event.

Kevin Reilly, Chairman of the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association said: “The World Pipe Band Championships is the competition where bands, pipers and drummers want to test themselves against the very best.

“It is a showcase for the best bands in the world and it is evident getting bands ready to play the toughest competition in the world and get them to Glasgow is impossible this year. Everyone involved is naturally disappointed but we remain hopeful we can stage The Worlds as we know them in 2022.”

Glasgow first hosted the World Pipe Championships in 1948. The last event took place in 2019, where 195 bands from across the world competed in front of thousands of spectators.

The current World Champions are Inveraray and District Pipe Band, who were crowned the winners in August 2019 and it was their second win in three years.
