Popular online video game World of Warcraft is currently down with many users reporting they are unable to connect to the game.

The popular multi-player, role-playing game has attracted a cult following, with millions of players worldwide.

But this afternoon, independent outage monitor Down Detector has received a surge in reports of issues with online play.

The reports are largely coming from gamers in the UK and Europe.

The highest number in Europe appear to be originating in Hamburg and Berlin, while the UK is seeing a spike in complaints from users in London and Manchester.

Developer Blizzard Entertainment has confirmed the issue on Twitter.

The group's European customer service team wrote: "Some #WoW #WoWClassic players may be experiencing latency or disconnections. We are investigating now."

One person wrote on Twitter: "Please hurry up! It's Friday and I want to play!!"

Another joked: "Have you tried turning it off and on again?"

As of 2pm, the developers had not provided an estimate of when it would be back online.

WalesOnline has contacted Blizzard Entertainment for comment.
