World number one Ashleigh Barty crashes out of Wimbledon fourth round after stunning Alison Riske comeback

World number one Ashleigh Barty is out of Wimbledon after her defeat to Alison Riske in the fourth round.

The Australian, who rose to the No 1 spot after her shock victory at the French Open, had been in fine form after a sensational 15-match winning run.

But Barty was brought down to earth with a thud by Riske, who reached her first-ever Grand Slam quarter-final at the 30th attempt and at the age of 29.

The 23-year-old, having taken the opening set against the unseeded American, was stunned as 55th-ranked Riske fought back to win 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Barty began well, serving four straight aces in the opening game on her way to winning a 21st successive set over the last three tournaments.

Yet Riske, who had spent more than four hours longer on court than Barty in the first week, dug-in for a trench battle, out-slugging Barty to take the next two sets.

She could potentially face seven-time champion Serena Williams in the last eight, with the 37-year-old taking on 30th seed Carla Suarez Navarro on No. 1 Court.
