World No 1 golf ace Dustin Johnson tests positive for Covid-19

World No 1 Dustin Johnson has tested positive for COVID-19.

The 36-year-old American, who last competed at September’s US Open, has withdrawn from this week’s CJ Cup in light of the diagnosis as he begins to self-isolate.

“Obviously, I am very disappointed,” said Johnson. “I was really looking forward to competing this week but will do everything I can to return as quickly as possible.

“I have already had a few calls with the Tour’s medical team and appreciate all the support and guidance they have given me.”

Johnson has had a sensational year, winning his first FedExCup championship at East Lake last month before taking home PGA Tour Player of the Year
honours for the second time.

Meanwhile, the Scottish Championship became the second European Tour event since golf’s restart to be hit by a mandatory Covid withdrawal when South Africa Jbe’ Kruger tested positive yesterday.

Kruger was put into isolation for 10 days after being screened on his arrival at the tournament which starts tomorrow at Fairmont St Andrews.

France’s Alex Levy was also withdrawn after testing positive ahead of the Celtic Classic in Wales in August. Spain has been awarded the 2023 Solheim Cup with the contest to be held at Finca Cortesin on the Costa del Sol.

It will follow Europe’s defence of the trophy in Toledo, Ohio next September.

Europe won the 2019 match at Gleneagles in the last singles match.
