'World Naked Bike Ride' cycles through Edinburgh leaving onlookers surprised

A group of naked cyclists shed their clothing and grabbed their bikes to make their way through the streets of Edinburgh.

The group were taking part in the ‘World Naked Bike Ride’ – which involves a ‘clothing-optional’ bike ride.

The World Naked Bike Ride first began in the United States to protest oil dependency and celebrate body positivity and now takes place in over 120 cities across the globe.

More than 15 cyclists set off from The Meadows on Saturday afternoon, September 4, with many only wearing helmets and rucksacks - while others chose to wear a T-shirt.

One onlooker, who was in the park where the cyclists gathered, told the Daily Record: "I thought it was great.

"There was a crowd watching them and there was music playing and then when they started cycling they were all honking their horns.

"It just seemed like a good buzz around the whole group of them."

He added: "I didn't see anything too shocking because of the distance I was at but a friend said she'd be wiping down any Just Eat hire bikes before she uses them because some of them were on them."

The ride made its way into the city centre with more locals taking to social media after seeing the unusual sight.

One said: "Accidentally caught the tail end of Edinburgh’s World Naked Bike Ride - well done lads."

The Royal Mile was also set to also be taken over by cyclists in the nude, with those taking part in the global event asked to meet on the Meadows.

The Edinburgh chapter of the ride applied to Edinburgh City Council bosses for permission to stage the event.

A report sent to councillors ahead of the event admits that ‘the council has limited powers available regarding the control of such parades’, except to prevent public disorder or a risk to public safety, and so the event was given the green light.

An Edinburgh Council spokesperson confirmed to the Daily Record they were aware of the bike ride taking place in the city today.
