World Mental Health Day: Pieta House issues heartfelt appeal to public to act with compassion

October 10 marks World Mental Health Day and Pieta House have made a plea to the public to look out for each other and ourselves.

World Health Organisation figures show that every 40 seconds someone dies by suicide around the world.

With that in mind, the Dublin-based suicide and self-harm service is asking people to take 40 seconds out of their busy day to reflect and reach out to others.

They said in a social media post: "We want you to take 40 seconds of action today to help raise awareness and fight against suicide, self-harm, and stigma.

"Take 40 seconds to check in with yourself, to listen to yourself, to breathe.

"Take 40 seconds to ask someone how they’re feeling.

"Take 40 seconds to reach out."

The heartfelt message ends with a quote to anyone who might be struggling, saying "You're not alone, there is always hope."

If you or someone you know are in a crisis situation please call our 24-hour Freephone helpline on 1800 247 247 or text HELP to 51444.
