World media reacts to killing of Sir David Amess

The news of MP Sir David Amess' death not only shocked Britain, but drew coverage across Europe and beyond, such was the magnitude of the story.

The 69-year-old is the second serving MP to be killed in the past five years, following the murder of Labour MP Jo Cox in 2016.

Police have said the investigation into Sir David’s death is being led by counter-terrorism officers. A man has been arrested and remains in police custody in connection with the incident.

Sir David's killing soon became one of the top stories for several major news outlets on the continent, a selection of which are shown below.

Le Monde in France led with ' Un député conservateur britannique poignardé à mort dans sa circonscription' - British Conservative MP stabbed to death in his constituency.

In Germany, meanwhile, Welt read: ' Tory-Abgeordneter Amess durch Messerattacke getötet – Tatverdächtiger festgenommen' - Tory MP Amess killed by knife attack - suspect arrested.

Over in Spain El Pais said: ' Un diputado conservador británico muere tras recibir varias puñaladas durante un acto público' - A British Conservative MP dies after being stabbed several times during a public event.

De Telegraaf in the Netherlands wrote: ' Brits parlementslid David Amess (69) doodgestoken' - British MP David Amess (69) stabbed to death.

Further afield, American outlet CNN and 9News in Australia also ran the story high on their sites.
