World Health Organisation adviser says vaccine passports are 'inevitable'

A World Health Organisation adviser on vaccine uptake has said that she believes that vaccine passports for certain activities are 'inevitable', according to reports.

Professor of Public Health at Sydney University, Julie Leask, who is also a WHO adviser, has said that vaccine passports could be useful to help with things like cross-border travel but has warned that they shouldn't be 'overused'.

Speaking to news outlet 3AW, Julie said: “It may be that we’ll have the requirement to show evidence of vaccination or an exemption in order to avoid quarantine, for example, if there’s a state-based lockdown. But if they’re overused they may harm the vaccine effort."

“It’s better to try and get people to vaccinate voluntarily because essentially if you say you can’t go to … the cinema, or you cant go to the pub unless you’ve got proof of your vaccination, then you potentially create an underclass of people who can’t get the record or can’t get vaccinated for whatever reason."

She added: “You may even get their backs up even more and they may have been been people who were going to vaccinate.”

Last month, vaccinated Scots were told that they are now able to provide evidence of their coronavirus jab ahead of any trips abroad.

The NHS Scotland website is allowing people to download or print proof that they have received either their first dose or both doses of the Covid jab.

Certification can be used for when holidaymakers travel out to countries where a so-called vaccine passport is needed.

The document will show your name, date of birth and a receipt of when the Covid jab was administered in Scotland.
