World famous pianist, conductor and composer André Previn dies aged 89

Oscar-winning composer and conductor André Previn has died at the age of 89.

The composer, who featured in a famed Morecambe and Wise sketch died at his home in New York on Thursday morning.

Mr Previn won four Oscars in his lifetime and was celebrated as a jazz pianist.

His death was confirmed by his manager, Linda Petrikova.

Mr Previn was fondly remembered for attempting to perform Grieg's piano concerto with Morcambe and Wise in a beloved sketch.

As well as collecting numerous Oscars, the Berlin native also won ten Grammy Awards for his recordings.

He was the legendary coductor of the London Symphony Orchestra and married five times.

Following news of Mr Previn's death, the orchestra tweeted: "Hearing the very sad news that André Previn, former LSO Principal Conductor and Conductor Emeritus has died. A full tribute will follow."

Mr Previn was a child prodigy whose family fled Nazi Germany.

As a teenager, he found work as a composer and arranger in the musical sweatshops of Hollywood, mostly at MGM, winning four Oscars for his orchestrations of such stylish musicals as 1964's "My Fair Lady."

He then abandoned Hollywood for a career as a classical conductor.
