'World famous Clifton Bridge' - National press reaction after Bristol City's Ashton Gate hosts England U21 game

Although they couldn't grab a victory over Poland, the England U21s put on an excellent show on Thursday evening in front of a near sell-out Ashton Gate.

There was plenty of national press attention for Ashton Gate, Bristol City and the two young Robins involved, Lloyd Kelly and Jay Dasilva.

Here's a pick of the coverage, where there was plenty of mention of the good crowds and the role that Dasilva played in the first goal.

The Times

James Gheerbrant reported on Jay Dasilva's role in the opening goal:

"He was presented with a far simpler task a few minutes later. Two Poland defenders misjudged Jay Dasilva’s pass, allowing Nelson to waltz into the area, slalom around Grabara and cut back for Calvert-Lewin to tap in."

The Guardian

Stuart James mentioned the 25,000 fans that came to Ashton Gate and the opposition fans, who contributed to a great atmosphere throughout, bangers and the odd flare aside.

"A free-flowing and entertaining game was played in front of more than 25,000 spectators, including a sizeable contingent of Poland fans. Stationed behind the goal where Szymanski scored, they had a perfect view of his 30-yard free-kick as it curled into the top corner."

The Daily Mail

Dominic King likewise made mention of the boisterous away support:

"It was quickly apparent this would not be a mundane contest. Poland, roared on by 2,000 ex-patriots, had three chances in the first three minutes as England’s defenders made silly mistakes and struggled to gather their composure."

The Sun

Paul Jiggins picked out the lovely backdrop at Ashton Gate:

"But the lights on the world-famous Clifton Bridge flickered away in the distance there was no shortage of suspense inside Ashton Gate either."
