World Environment Day: supporting farmers to protect their environment

The long-term supply of some of our best-loved commodities like tea, coffee and cocoa depend on the protection of our natural environment.

At the Sireet Outgrowers Empowerment Project in Kenya, farmers who supply Fairtrade tea to brands including Cafédirect, Traidcraft, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose, are being supported to adapt their farming methods so that they can increase their yields and become more sustainable.

From establishing a tree nursery to learning about the safe use of chemicals, the technical support and training provided through Fairtrade Africa and Vi Agroforestry means these farmers stand a better chance of adapting to the challenges posed by climate change.

By sharing the knowledge they have acquired, these farmers can also help the wider tea sector to adapt. “I’m ready to go out and train others”, says tea farmer, Luke Metto.
