World Darts Final pits two avid rugby league fans head-to-head

The World Darts Championship Final has turned into quite the global spectacle these days.

Millions are expected to tune in to the showpiece event at Ally Pally this evening in a battle that will put Michael Smith and Peter Wright head-to-head.

For rugby league fans, the match carries extra meaning, with the two arrow throwers big fans of the great game.

Michael Smith is a huge supporter of hometown club St Helens while Wright, the world number two and former World champion, supports Leeds Rhinos.

St Helens have constantly shown their support for world number nine Smith during the tournament which has been backed by a number of players, including star forward Alex Walmsley.

Meanwhile, the Rhinos sent their well wishes to Wright, who has previously posted pictures of himself in Leeds gear and has a jersey hung up in his practice room.

The contest is set to be a cracker, with the pair evenly matched going into the final. Wright has averaged 100.66 during the tournament and staggeringly, Smith is just 0.01 behind with an average of 100.65.

Wright is a one-time champion after beating Michael Van Gerwen in 2020. Meanwhile, 31-year-old Smith has never won the crown having lost in the 2019 final to the Dutchman.

The match will be live on Sky Sports Main Event at 8 PM.
