World Darts Championship first round victory for on-song Daryl Gurney

Darts ace Daryl Gurney was on song at the World Darts Championship - in more ways than one.

The Derry native was in fine form as he won his first round match against Ricky Evans with a 3-1 scoreline.

And the world number 22 also hit the high notes when he grabbed a microphone and launched into a rendition of Sweet Caroline to the delight of the Alexandra Palace hordes.

It’s fair to say Gurney, 35, is unlikely to win The X Factor or hit the top of the charts given his questionable singing performance.

But a first world title could yet be on the cards as the popular Northern Irishman moved into the second round without too much stress.

'Superchin' posted six 180s and a three-dart average of over 95 on his way to victory over world number 40 Evans.

But he will now face the winner of former champion Rob Cross against either Lourence Ilagan or five-times World Champion Raymond van Barneveld.

Elsewhere, Irishman Steve Lennon also reached round two thanks to a 3-1 success against Madars Razma of Latvia and there were also afternoon wins for Chris Landman and Chas Barstow.

Belcoo’s Brendan Dolan is still in the dark as to his opening opponent as he awaits the victor from Callan Rydz against Japan’s Yuki Yamada on Saturday.
