World Darts Championship 2019: Kevin Burness up for the challenge at Ally Pally

Co Down's Kevin Burness is counting down the hours to the PDC World Darts Championship.

The Ballywalter arrows ace is at Alexandra Palace to compete in the biggest professional darts tournament on the planet.

Burness takes on former World champion Jelle Klaasen in the first round on Friday night (7pm, Sky Sports).

If he wins then he will face reigning champion and World Number One Michael van Gerwen later that evening.

Burness qualified for last year's tournament, whitewashing Paul Nicholson 3-0 before losing out to Gary Anderson.

Belfast Live caught up with Kevin ahead of his second Ally Pally appearance.

Q1. You will face Jelle Klaasen first round, how has your preparation gone and what do you make of your chances?

I've just been practising as I normally do.  If I play like I know I can I've every chance of beating him .

Q2. If you get past Jelle, you will face Michael van Gerwen, how great would that be playing the world number one at the biggest stage of all live on Sky Sports?

I haven't thought further than my first game but it would be amazing to play the number one in the world. I just wish it was later on in the tournament though!

Q3. You have to get to the last 16 to save your tour card, have you thought about that yet or you just thinking one game at a time?

I am not going to think too much about my tour card and just take each game as it comes. But if I have to go back to Q school in January I'm confident I can get it back.

Q4. Do you think the experience playing last year will help you this year?

Yeah, I'll know what to expect this year. Let's just hope the lights don't go out this year!

Q5. Do you feel hard done having to potentially play twice on the same night - again?

I feel a little hard done by. I never seem to get a break, always drawing the top players early on but they all have to be beaten to win the tournament.

Q6. You earned your spot this year as you played outstanding in the PDPA Qualifier. How great did that feel coming through a tough field and playing very well?

It felt great as it was my best performance this year. I felt really comfortable with my game on the day. Let's hope I can take it to Ally Pally.

Q7. Finally, do you expect to have great support from your country and your hometown Ballywalter?

Yes, I always get great support from my home town. And also from Newtownards and Belfast where I play league darts.  And not forgetting my family here and in Wales.
