World Cup winner makes West Ham's Gianluca Scamacca point amid Italy striker comparison

Italy's World Cup winner Beppe Bergomi believes Gianluca Scamacca is a better fit for Roberto Mancini's side than Mateo Retegui.

The West Ham United striker has been forced to start Italy's past two games on the bench as the Euro 2020 winners have opted for Argentinian-born Retegui to lead the line.

The Club Atletico Tigre forward scored his second Gli Azzurri goal in as many games in the 2-0 win versus Malta on Sunday, eventually being replaced by Scamacca for the final 25 minutes.

The Hammers attacker's lack of appearances at the London Stadium since a knee injury sustained in January has resulted in Scamacca's diminished role with his national side but he has a fan in Bergomi, who feels Scamacca is better suited to Mancini's tactics.

“He scored a goal [against Malta] and this is good,” the 1982 World Cup winner told Sky Sport Italia. “However, considering his performance, I have to suspend the judgment. I believe Scamacca moves differently and in a better way.”

Scamacca came off the bench in Italy's 2-1 defeat against England last Thursday, playing the final two minutes without having a touch of the ball. Retegui in that same fixture scored on his debut having started the match in Naples.
