World Cup star refused entry into Canada amid investigation into alleged match-fixing

  • Ivory Coast forward Elye Wahi has been denied entry into Canada for his country's upcoming World Cup match against Germany.
  • The denial follows his arrest on 29 May by French police over allegations of match-fixing, specifically for deliberately earning a yellow card in a Ligue 1 game on 17 May.
  • Wahi is currently the subject of an “active investigation” by French police regarding suspicious betting patterns related to his yellow card while playing for Nice against Metz.
  • The Ivorian Football Federation (FIF) stated that “necessary administrative authorisations” for his entry into Canadian territory could not be obtained, and he will remain in the US.
  • Wahi is the second World Cup player to be refused entry to Canada, after Ghana's Thomas Partey , though Wahi has not yet been charged with any crime.
