And with that, it’s time to wrap this Matchday live up. Thanks for joining us today!
FULL-TIME: Arsenal 1-0 Brighton
It wasn’t particularly pretty, but Arsenal get a much-needed win.
Updated
90+10 min: Arsenal should be able to see this one out with three minutes left to play. Brighton haven’t had too many chances in this second half.
90+8 min: Little finds Blackstenius with a fantastic defence-splitting pass into the box. The striker goes for goal with her first touch but drags her shot wide!
90+1 min: We’re into 13 minutes of added time.
90 min: Russo goes for a volley from the edge of the box, but drills her effort inches wide!
89 min: Chloe Kelly is on for the Gunners, replacing Foord. Meanwhile, someone in the crowd starts waving a 3ft cutout of the England star’s face in the stands. That surely can’t be practical to carry on the Piccadilly Line…
Updated
88 min: We’re approaching the end of normal time, although there will be a significant amount added on following that injury to Mpomé.
85 min: Blackstenius is currently the furthest player forward for Arsenal, with Russo holding back slightly. The Gunners are on the front foot for now.
83 min: Nnadozie is enjoying a brilliant game for Brighton. The goalkeeper comes out of her box to head clear a through ball. She also made a fantastic tackle on Russo earlier in the match.
78 min: Arsenal continue looking for a second as Little plays a pass to Blackstenius in the box, which is intercepted and sent out for a corner.
McCabe crosses it in and Blackstenius heads it just wide.
72 min: Mpomé is being stretchered off. She will be replaced by Marit Auee.
Updated
69 min: Mpomé is still being treated by the medics. A stretcher has been taken over.
63 min: Mpomé suffers a ball to the face and she does not appear to be in a good way. The physios are all over by the Brighton defender.
60 min: Brighton come close as a cross is sent into Camacho in the box. The striker goes for the header but Van Domselaar can make the save.
58 min: Huge chance for the hosts as McCabe sends a corner into the box. Nnadozie punches it out but only as far as Smith, who goes for the volley which is blocked. The ball then drops out to Maanum, who shoots but Mpomé makes a fantastic block on the line.
Updated
56 min: Chance for Brighton now as Camacho receives the ball in the box before shooting on the half-turn. Her effort is saved by Van Domselaar.
52 min: McCabe goes for a snap shot on the edge of the box, but her effort is saved by Nnadozie.
48 min: Arsenal kick off the second half all guns blazing (pun intended) and pile the pressure on Brighton. They have three early corners but cannot make the most of any of them.

We’re back under way at the Emirates Stadium!
Tom Garry was at Hill Dickinson Stadium this afternoon as Manchester United came from behind to earn a 4-1 win against Everton.
HALF-TIME: Arsenal 1-0 Brighton
The Gunners lead at the break, but they will need a huge improvement in the second half if they want to avoid dropping points again.
45+1 min: Seike breezes past Reid far too easily before shooting from the edge of the box, forcing a save from Van Domselaar.
45+1 min: Just the one minute has been added on…
40 min: McCabe gets the ball blasted into her face by Kirby from close range – accidental of course – but ouch, that’s got to hurt!
38 min: Chance for Brighton as Kirby loops a brilliant pass over to Seike, who is chased into the box by McCabe before going for goal from a tight angle, forcing a strong save from Van Domselaar.
35 min: Brighton have been let back into the game by Arsenal here. They are starting to put some pressure on but the Gunners seem to be dealing with it relatively well for now.
28 min: The earlier goal has officially been registered as a Marisa Olislagers own-goal.
24 min: Brighton are beginning to gain a bit of momentum now. A cross is looped over to Seike in the box, but McCabe and Van Domselaar eventually make the clearance before a foul is given.
22 min: First chance for Brighton as the ball is played to Kirby inside the box, who looks to chip it over Van Domselaar with a first-time shot. The attempt is easily saved by the goalkeeper.
20 min: Brighton are yet to have a touch in the Arsenal box. The Gunners have dominated this game so far.
GOAL! Arsenal 1-0 Brighton (Marisa Olislagers OG, 15)
It was coming! Arsenal break the deadlock!
The ball is played through to Smith, who looks to either shoot or play a pass inside to Russo, but her effort takes a deflection off Olislagers before rolling into the net!
Updated
10 min: Another big chance for Arsenal! Foord plays the ball out to McCabe on the left, who notices Nnadozie off her line and goes for an audacious shot which is brilliantly saved by the goalkeeper.
Foord then picks up possession in the box before going for goal, forcing another strong stop from Nnadozie.
Updated
9 min: Huge chance for the hosts! Caldentey steps up to take a corner and drills the ball low into the box. It deflects to Smith around 15 yards out, who goes for the shot but fires her shot over the crossbar!
5 min: Arsenal have had the majority of possession in these early stages but they are yet to do anything effective with it.
KICK OFF - Arsenal v Brighton
We’re under way at the Emirates Stadium!
Just a reminder that Brighton will be without both Michelle Agyemang and Rosa Kafaji, who are both on loan from Arsenal, today.
Both players have been hugely influential this season, with two goals and two assists between them so far.
The Gunners have arguably been at their best going forward with Frida Maanum and Alessia Russo playing together. They need the creativity this afternoon.
Arsenal need a win this afternoon against Brighton. Anything less and they will be all-but out of the title race already. The margin for error is very small in the WSL and the Gunners cannot drop any more points at this stage.
Arsenal v Brighton team news
Arsenal starting line-up: Van Domselaar, Fox, Catley, Reid, McCabe, Little, Caldentey, Smith, Maanum, Foord, Russo.
Substitutes: Zinsberger, Wubben-Moy, Codina, Mead, Kelly, Pelova, Hinds, Blackstenius, Cooney-Cross.
Brighton starting line-up: Nnadozie, McLauchlan, Hayes, Rule, Olislagers, Symonds, Cankovic; Kirby, Camacho, Mpome Seike.
Substitutes: Poulter, Baggaley, Noordam, Carabali, Auee, Tsunoda, Martin, Milner, Heron.

Next up, we’re off to the Emirates Stadium for Arsenal v Brighton. Let me bring you some team news…
Thanks Dominic! Well, after a slow start things certainly picked up in the second half of each game – perhaps not as much at Villa Park, however.
Jess Park certainly made an impact, scoring twice after coming off the bench for United. She has been phenomenal since completing the switch from Manchester City.
Final scores
Aston Villa 0-0 Leicester
Chelsea 1-0 Tottenham
Everton 1-4 Manchester United
London City Lionesses 1-0 West Ham
I’m handing back to Emillia Hawkins who will guide you through the reaction, and the rest of our live coverage today.
Chelsea win 1-0 over Tottenham which means it’s just the final knockings of the United game to conclude these earlier kickoffs. United have had a couple of injury worries, to Jess Park and Ella Toone, during the added time period.
Updated
London City 1-0 West Ham is also a final score which means the visitors are still winless, pointless and rooted to the foot of the WSL table after six matches.
Aston Villa 0-0 Leicester has finished. Not one that will live long in the memory.
Some good news late in the Chelsea game: Lucy Bronze is back playing football. Remember when she revealed she’d played the whole Euros with a broken leg? The England full-back is made of seriously stern stuff.
Into added time now … can Spurs find something at Chelsea? Can Villa or Leicester find a winner?
GOAL! Everton 1-4 Man Utd (Park, 89)
Jess Park has a second goal in a superb cameo! This one is the pick of the bunch, with Galton pressing, winning it, laying it off to Toone, who in turn fed Park to drill home.
Updated
In Spain, Barça Femení have just hammered second-placed Atletico Madrid 6-0 away from home, putting an immense seven-point gap between them and their nearest challengers after just seven games. Barcelona have a perfect league record this season with seven wins.
With Spurs losing at leaders Chelsea, United are poised to go second in the WSL.
Manchester City will be able to leapfrog them later if they secure a win at Liverpool.
GOAL! Everton 1-3 Man Utd (Park, 84)
Game, set and match, United. Jess Park opts not to celebrate against her former club but it’s a hammer blow for Everton, with Park’s finish deflected past Ramsey.
Updated
83 mins: United are now knocking the ball around with some confidence. It’s hard to see, with Everton having so little possession, how they find a way back into this.
The Everton v Man United game is running slightly behind the rest… and will probably have a fair bit of added time as the managers ring the changes.
Malard, who scored the equaliser and was involved in the melee that yielded the second goal, is taken off, with Leah Galton, Rachel Williams and Julia Zigiotti Olme all on for United.
The only goalless game now is Aston Villa v Leicester and if we haven’t brought you many updates from that one… it’s because there hasn’t been very much to report. Nearly 80 minutes gone, still time for either side to conjure up a winner.
It’s ironic that United have earned those two goals just as Everton were enjoying one of their better spells of the game. On the whole, however, the visitors probably deserve it.
Both scruffy goals really but United will not care.
GOAL! Everton 1-2 Man Utd (Kitagawa OG, 70)
Two in quick succession for Manchester United after a real mess in the Everton box, trying to deal with a set piece. Kitagawa has turned into her own net, a real miscue and a horrid moment for the Everton defender.
Updated
GOAL! London City 1-0 West Ham (Asllani, 68)
Kosovare Asllani scores for London City in this derby against West Ham.
West Ham keeper Kinga Szemik slipped at the wrong moment and it was gift-wrapped for Asllani to tap home.
Updated
68 mins: Everton fans don’t sound too happy with the withdrawal of Katie Robinson, who has played well on the wing today, but clearly Brian Sørensen isn’t content with a draw and wants to refresh his attack.
Martha Thomas is on for Spurs. Can they find a route back into the game at Kingsmeadow? Walsh’s goal was a beauty, by the way, lashed in across goalkeeper Kop.
GOAL! Everton 1-1 Man Utd (Malard, 62)
AND ANOTHER! Melvine Malard is denied with her first effort but the rebound comes straight back to the United striker to slot home into an empty net. It’s hard on Everton who have fought hard, but Emily Ramsey could only parry it back to Malard.
Updated
GOAL! Chelsea 1-0 Tottenham (Walsh, 61)
It took more than hour of dogged Tottenham defending, but finally Chelsea have found a way and it’s Keira Walsh who’s done it.
Updated
An hour gone. One goal in four games. Each of them still on a knife-edge.
57 mins: Ruby Mace befuddles Le Tissier with some adept footwork in midfield and, yet again, helps Everton out of trouble. The home side continue to impress, especially the 22-year-old midfielder.
54 mins: At Chelsea, Lize Kop saves AGAIN from Beever-Jones. I’ve said that a few times already today. Spurs are somehow still level despite coming under heavy fire.
Ian Wright is in attendance at Everton, no doubt keeping an eye on the players who could be called into the next Lionesses squad, the huge England fan that he is.
United have made a 50th-minute change, replacing Elisabeth Terland with Jess Park.
The second halves are now under way in these four games. Let’s hope for a few more goals …
What does Marc Skinner say to his Manchester United troops at half-time? They’ve not looked as sharp or energetic today as on previous occasions this season, with Everton matching them for hard running and physicality.
United have been unfortunate with a few big chances going awry and must be more clinical, but Skinner will want more between the two boxes, too.
If you want more elite women’s sport today, India’s batters are putting on an absolute clinic against Australia in the Cricket World Cup. Have a glance at our coverage here.
Half time scores
The whistles have all sounded and here’s how things stand after 45 minutes.
Aston Villa 0-0 Leicester
Chelsea 0-0 Tottenham
Everton 1-0 Manchester United
London City Lionesses 0-0 West Ham
Into first half added time in most of these games. United look short of ideas and in need of some half-time inspiration.
West Ham have grown back into the game against London City Lionesses but it’s sounded like a pretty turgid watch so far, that one. Goalless still at Hayes Lane, AKA the Copperjax Stadium.
Updated
40 mins: Ruby Mace is a fine player. She’s shown for the ball to get her side out of danger and looks to have an excellent passing range. A great signing for Everton in midfield.
Tottenham are sitting deeper and deeper, allowing Chelsea to completely boss proceedings at Kingsmeadow. It feels like a redundant tactic. Are they really going to defend successfully for an hour or more against the champions?
Any chance of a goal in the other games… please?
It’s goalless at London City, Chelsea and Aston Villa.
Updated
Terland sends a shot inches wide of the upright! A great fast United counterattack sees Malard charging into space (as she’s done a few times today) before feeding the Norwegian, whose effort was always sliding just wide. Still 1-0 to Everton with nearly 34 minutes on the clock.
30 mins: Not sure Marc Skinner will be happy with Lisa Naalsund having a pop from 25 yards or so with space and options in front of her. The shot was way off-target and squandered a good attacking sequence.
United continue to probe at Hill Dickinson but Everton remain solid at the back. Jayde Riviere continues to shine for United, bombing on from right-back.
25 mins: Aggie Beever-Jones has a sniff of goal but an onrushing Lize Kop in the Spurs goal denies the Chelsea striker a clean effort. The visitors continue to frustrate Chelsea.
22 mins: Everton are showing great tenacity in defence and, since scoring, have looked more confident in edging forward with the ball. United are always a threat, but they’ve been shellshocked by the goal, I suspect.
London City have been on top at home to West Ham but so far have failed to convert their dominance into goals. They’ll hope to avoid the kind of sucker punch that’s just winded Manchester United.
GOAL! Everton 1-0 Man Utd (Hayashi, 16)
Tullis-Joyce doesn’t deal with an Everton set piece and it’s Honoka Hayashi who reacts quickest to stab home the rebound before haring off to celebrate. The home side score the first ever women’s goal at Hill Dickinson Stadium – even if it’s completely against the run of play!
Updated
15 mins: Spurs have tested Hannah Hampton early on with a couple of crosses, but the Chelsea keeper has so far been up to the test. A quiet start from the WSL champions.
10 minutes gone in these midday kickoffs and we’re yet to see a goal. Who will be the first to break the collective deadlock?
My bet is on Manchester United, who are throwing the kitchen sink at Everton without success so far.
Normally you’d expect Chelsea to see off Tottenham at home but this year’s version of Spurs means they’re a far tougher nut to crack. Sonia Bompastor’s side rarely show weakness at Kingsmeadow, but an away win would see Spurs go top.
United have impressed me every time I’ve seen them this season. Particularly impressive has been Hinata Miyazawa in the pivot role in front of the defence. She’s already doing her thing: mopping up and springing attacks, with another chance going begging now as Terland nods wide from Rolfö cross.
Updated
2 mins: The atmosphere at Hill Dickinson Stadium is very good but Everton should be a goal down early on. United find acres of space behind the lines and it’s squared for Lisa Naalsund who cannot believe she’s missed. Blazed miles over the bar when hitting the target looked easier.
KICK OFF
Thanks Emillia. Just in time for all four kickoffs. Let’s go!
Dominic Booth is here now to guide you through the lunchtime games. Over to you, Dom!
The atmosphere around the Hill Dickinson Stadium has been one of great anticipation, largely because so many Everton fans are getting the chance to come here for the first time, many of whom are on the waiting list for men’s season tickets. Only the lower tier of the stands are open but that lower tier is around half full at the moment so there’ll be a big turnout relative to the Everton women’s team’s usual turnouts at Goodison, as especially relative to their tiny numbers at Walton Hall Park last season. There are also close to 1,000 away fans from Manchester United in a corner away to my left. There is a mist in the air - I could barely see the other side of the Mersey when I parked up by the banks of the river around 10am this morning in the fog. But this impressive bit of architecture drew gasps of joy from many of the first-timers walking towards the ground.
Leicester City are winless in each of their last 18 WSL away games, dating back to February last year. Can they finally break the streak today?
Lucy Bronze returns to the Chelsea squad today for the first time this season. The full-back has been unavailable since the Euro 2025 final – when she revealed that she had been playing with a fractured tibia.
On her return, Sonia Bompastor said: “I think a caged tiger is a really good description of Lucy! She brings a lot of energy to the team. I’ve never had someone in my squad with her mentality. She’s really tough, and I think it’s good to have these leaders back in the group.”

We’ve got some WSL team news dropping shortly. I’ll do my best to bring you updates from each fixture as soon as possible.
Steven Gerrard withdrew from talks over the vacant Rangers managerial position earlier this week. The Liverpool icon had been the overwhelming choice of the Rangers support before pulling himself out of contention. Now, former Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Röhl has emerged as the favourite.
Scotland fans, what do you think?
Fifa has begun redrafting its regulations on staging domestic league games in foreign countries and is seeking legal advice over whether it can ban them. World football’s governing body would like to outlaw the practice but will be guided by legal opinion in its first review of the relevant regulations for 11 years.
A source involved in the process said Fifa was working towards making its rulebook more robust with a view to new regulations being ready early next year. This week Uefa blamed the “relevant Fifa regulatory framework” for its decision to allow Villarreal v Barcelona to take place in Miami in December and Milan v Como to go ahead in Perth in February. That is understood to have caused considerable irritation at Fifa because under existing regulations it is not their decision to make.
Ahead of today’s game, Scotland manager Steve Clarke said: “I’d be a bit daft if I wasn’t proud because I’m the first guy to reach that amount of games. It’s nice, but that’s a little personal thing at the moment. It shouldn’t be about me. It’s about the team and it’s about trying to get to the World Cup so that’s what we’re going to focus on.
“The brief was to qualify for tournaments. We’ve managed to do that twice, but we want to do it again because we’re all greedy. The expectation was to do as well as I could. I’ve always looked at the players and you’re thinking: ‘What can we do to improve?’ Did I think it would last this long? Probably not, but here I am.”
“If you want to qualify, these are the games you have to win,. You have to give yourself a platform to play against the bigger nations. If you drop points to the teams ranked below you, it makes qualification very difficult. If you look at our barren years, maybe we messed up against opposition we felt we should have been beating.
“In my tenure we’ve done well against the so-called lesser teams in the groups and it’s very important you get the points off these teams. It’s very important we get the points off Belarus. They’ll come here, they’ll be organised, they’ll be difficult to break down and until you break them down it’s a long night.
“They’ll make it difficult but it’s up to us to make sure that we approach the game properly, which we will. It’s up to us to make sure that we create enough chances in the game to get the crowd excited, which we hopefully will. The crowd need to back the players, the players need to give the crowd something to shout about and that’s what we’ll try to achieve.”
Steve Clarke will take a moment to celebrate a significant achievement when Belarus visit Hampden Park today. It will be game 72 in office for Clarke, surpassing Craig Brown as Scotland’s longest-serving manager in terms of matches.
The Guardian’s fans’ network has assessed the Premier League season so far, looking at the best games and goals, the biggest gaffes and managerial performances.
With it being the men’s international break, several club stadiums will be used this afternoon. Aston Villa and Arsenal will continue using Villa Park and the Emirates Stadium respectively.
Anfield will be the location for Liverpool v Manchester City in the final match of the day, while Everton will host Manchester United at the new Hill Dickinson Stadium for the first time.
With four games scheduled for the 12pm slot this afternoon, I’d love to hear your thoughts on the new broadcast pattern. It seems to be a real opinion-splitter, with several fans complaining about the surge in midday kick-offs.
Feel free to email us at matchday.live@theguardian.com with your take.
Renée Slegers revealed this week that she has been showing her Arsenal players footage of tennis legend Roger Federer in a bid to improve performances. Slegers explained: “It’s not only about the football. A piece of it is about the psychology as well. How we stay in games, how we react to certain moments.
“I looked at a really inspirational video of Roger Federer. What he did as a tennis player to go from point to point. That’s all we’re looking at and we do that together as a group. This week, everything has been very honest and transparent. We spent a lot of time together. What I see and what I take from it is that everyone wants the same thing, everyone wants Arsenal to succeed.
“It’s really clear in my head, that’s why I brought it up. We had a look today. He talks about the percentage of games he’s won in his career and the percentage of points he’s won in his career. That’s really interesting.
“He talks about his mindset. The point he’s playing for at the moment is the most important point. But then that’s done. When that point is over, he goes on to the next one. I think he won, as he says himself, 54% of his points. He’s been one of the best two times at tennis. That says something about how he comes back after points and how he was really good at being good in the most important moments, the points that count. That was good inspiration.
“I also do want to put things into perspective and look at wider things and get inspiration from other athletes and sports teams. Like I just mentioned earlier, all athletes and teams go through different times. It’s about how you come back. That’s why this was brought up because we spoke about Roger Federer this morning.”
We might be just over one month into the WSL season, but Arsenal find themselves facing a must-win game already. The Gunners dropped points to Manchester United and Aston Villa before losing to Manchester City last week, leaving them fifth in the WSL table and five points behind leaders Chelsea.
If they lose to Brighton this afternoon, Arsenal could find themselves out of the title race completely.
Speaking of former Manchester City managers, our very own Tom Garry spoke to Nick Cushing recently about his time at the club and his new challenge with NWSL side Denver Summit.
Gareth Taylor will be looking to impress against his former club this afternoon as Liverpool host Manchester City at Anfield. Taylor was sacked by City in March and is still yet to win a WSL game with Liverpool.
Ahead of the game, Taylor told Sky Sports: “There’s a certain amount of loyalty with my coaching history. I’m not a religious person, but this way and this style is like my religion.
“It evolves, of course it does. There’s some concepts within the game model that are completely changed from when I first started a head coach role and that’s fantastic.
“I don’t think it can be set. Nothing’s ever set where nothing evolves and doesn’t change, and you have to adapt but for me, it’s taking comfort in that also.
“It’s always really good to be able to have a way and a style of playing that allows you to review, and we’ve had really good opportunities to review recently. It really is a good template to have to show you where you’ve been successful and where perhaps we need to improve on.
“The brief has to be, can we bring an identity and a style to Liverpool that’s unique to us? And what we’ve seen so far in those difficult moments is glimpses of what that future could look like.”
In other WSL news this week, Rick Passmoor became Leicester City head coach on a permanent basis after a successful interim period. Passmoor signed a three-year deal with the Foxes and said: “I am very privileged and very honoured to be at this club. I want to ensure we continue to progress and further establish ourselves in the WSL.
“There’s history on the men’s side, and we want to make sure we leave a legacy with Leicester Women.”
High-flying Tottenham travel to Kingsmeadow this afternoon to face Chelsea in what could prove to be a very competitive London derby. Spurs have been enjoying a positive run of form following the arrival of new head coach Martin Ho.
“There is still a lot of work to do; we’re only five games in,” Ho said before the game. “The players’ feet are very well grounded. We always look for things we can do better and we have to keep improving.”
We might be in the midst of the men’s international break, but the WSL remains in full swing. All 12 teams are in action today, with four games kicking off at 12pm BST.
Chelsea v Tottenham (12pm BST)
London City Lionesses v West Ham (12pm BST)
Aston Villa v Leicester City (12pm BST)
Everton v Manchester United (12pm BST)
Arsenal v Brighton (2:30pm BST)
Liverpool v Manchester City (4:45pm BST)
