World Cup hero Gerry Armstrong reveals preference for Northern Ireland manager job

World Cup hero Gerry Armstrong says Motherwell boss Stephen Robinson has all the credentials to become the next Northern Ireland manager.

Robinson has emerged as one the early frontrunners to succeed Michael O’Neill alongside U21 coach Ian Baraclough and experienced St Johnstone manager Tommy Wright.

Former Hearts No2 Austin MacPhee, who was part of O’Neill’s backroom staff, Linfield boss David Healy and Jim Magilton, head of the IFA’s Elite Development, are also in the running.

But Armstrong, who scored a famous winner against Spain at the 1982 World Cup, says Robinson tops his list of potential successors.

He said: “Ian Baraclough has obviously been running the U21s, has worked under Michael O’Neill and has done a really good job.

“But Robbo (Robinson) played for Northern Ireland and I think that gives him an edge. He has also done a fantastic job with Motherwell with a small budget.

“He was part of Michael’s backroom staff at the Euro 2016 finals, so he knows the players and the players know him and you won’t get anyone with more enthusiasm.

“There will be a lot of names linked with the post, but if I’m pushed on it, my personal choice would be Stephen Robinson. He’s the one I’d go for.”

Armstrong believes Jimmy Nicholl, another 1982 World Cup hero who was part of O’Neill’s staff, should be retained by the new manager.

“I’d keep Jimmy on board - he has to be involved,” he said. “He has so much experience and the players love him. He’s a top man.”
