World Cup fan throws beer in face of TV journalist reporting on England v Croatia semi-final

A journalist had a beer thrown in his face while reporting on England and Croatia’s World Cup semi-final in south London.

Lloyd Burr, from New Zealand-based programme the AM Show, claimed the man who hurled the drink at him at Boxpark Croydon was a “drunken Aussie”.

England’s hopes getting into a World Cup final for the first time in over half a century were destroyed after they lost 2-1 to Croatia in extra-time in Moscow.

As the referee was close to blowing the whistle, Mr Burr said: “I’ve got a very angry England fan coming up to me."

The man can be seen hurling what appears to be a pint of beer in the Kiwi reporter’s face.

"It's gone from jubilation to frustration, then anticipation... now it has turned to anger," he said, while wiping the beer from his face.

"The English fans are very angry and the ref is just about to blow this final whistle - it is Croatia's game, I believe."

Mr Burr – who is NZ news service Newshub’s Europe correspondent - said he enjoyed the game despite the saga.

“First time to Croydon, south London and what an initiation! Apart from the beer in the face (by a drunken Aussie), it was an epic atmosphere to watch a great game. @simonmorrowNZ and I are all good. Thanks for your kind messages,” he said.
