World Cup 2026: England outshine Croatia in thriller, Portugal held to draw

England made a winning start to their World Cup campaign as they overpowered Croatia in a thriller in Dallas (4-2). Harry Kane scored twice, bringing him level with Gary Lineker on 10 World Cup goals.

Portugal were held to a disappointing draw by an impressive DR Congo side in their opening game of the World Cup (1-1). Ghana scored a 95th-minute winner to deny Panama their first World Cup point.

Elsewhere, for his return to competition, Tadej Pogacar grabbed the Tour de Suisse's first stage with a 69km solo.
