World Cup 2022: Where it is, when it's being held, and how to get tickets

After doing well at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, England have carried on the good work into the Euros and will now go up against Italy in the final on Sunday.

Regardless of what happens in that match though, Gareth Southgate and his team will be hoping to go deep into the next tournament, too: the 2022 World Cup.

With so much interest right now surrounding the England team, who are riding the crest of a wave of public affection, even drawing in people who don't ordinarily follow football, we thought we'd gather everything we know about the next major tournament in to one place.

When is the next World Cup?

The next Fifa World Cup will be held in 2022, in keeping with the tournament's four-year cycle. However, it will be held during winter for the first time ever due to the intense summer heat in the tournament's host country, Qatar.

The first match will kick off on November 21, 2022, and the final will be held on December 18.

Where is the 2022 World Cup being held?

The 2022 World Cup is to be held in Qatar, making it the first World Cup to be held in the Arab world. It is also the first World Cup to be held on Asian soil since the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea, and Qatar is the smallest country by area to have ever hosted the tournament.

Qatar's bid to host the tournament has been mired in controversy since Fifa awarded it to the country. There have been numerous allegations of corruption and bribery, for example.

More recently, the Qatari authorities have been accused of human rights abuses and modern slavery of migrant workers brought in to prepare stadiums and infrastructure for the tournament. A report from the Guardian said at least 6,500 migrant workers have died in the country since it won the rights to host the tournament in 2010; the Qatari government did not dispute the figures but said the number of deaths were "within the expected range for the size and demographics of the population".

Separately, Amnesty International has said migrant workers are forced to live in squalid accommodation and pay huge fees to be hired. It also says they have wages withheld and passports confiscated so they cannot leave.

How do you book tickets?

Fifa has not said when tickets will go on sale; it simply says "information regarding ticketing for the Fifa World Cup Qatar 2022 will be available in due course" and advises fans check the Fifa website regularly.

Major tournaments' ticketing is usually controlled by the governing body - in this case Fifa - with some sold directly through that body, some handed to sponsors, and some given to national teams and football associations for them to sell.

Should England qualify, the FA will be given an allocation to sell to England fans, but you may need to be a member of the England Supporters Travel Club, which costs £75 to join.

England's World Cup qualification journey continues against Hungary on Thursday September 2, 2021.

The Three Lions currently sit top of their qualifying group with three wins from three.
