Australia's incredible World Cup run has ended at the hands of Argentina, going down 2-1.
Craig Goodwin scored his second goal of the World Cup to give the Socceroos some hope late in the match, but it wasn't enough to survive Argentina's class.
Earlier, a bad mistake from goalkeeper Mat Ryan saw Argentina score their second goal after Lionel Messi drew first blood to put them ahead in the round of 16 clash with the Socceroos.

Well done to the Socceroos ... we'll call it a morning

Time for a deep breath, Australia.
It wasn't the result the Socceroos - or fans - were after, but we have to acknowledge the level of the opposition, and the scale of the task they were facing at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium.
In the end, Australia found it too hard to keep control of the ball for long enough, and when you have the superstar that is Lionel Messi on the opposing side, you know that you only have to get it wrong once, and he and his teammates will make you pay.
Overall, though, there is plenty to take from Australia's World Cup campaign, and the Socceroos deserve a lot of credit for getting two wins in a group the pundits never expected them to escape.
In the meantime, while Australia is out, there are some great sides still in the competition, and some great games in prospect. It's all win or go home from here, and the drama should be next level.

'The mistake cost us': Socceroos put up a fight but mistake costs shot at glory

Coach Graham Arnold has paid tribute to the Socceroos, who have gone out of the tournament after their 2-1 loss to Argentina.
The Australians leave Qatar after their best performance at the World Cup, with two wins in a single edition of the tournament for the first time.
Arnold said he was proud of his players, but admitted a mistake by goalkeeper Mat Ryan - that led to Argentina's second goal - had cost the team.
"I have to be very proud of the players. You know, we played against the number three in the world. And the first goal from Messi was a quality goal. The mistake cost us," he said.
"I just hope that everyone back in Australia really respects what we've done and are proud of us as well. We took it to them."
Brazilian football legend Pele stable in hospital

In other football news, Brazilian great Pele remains in stable condition after being hospitalised this week as he battles colon cancer, a hospital medical report said on Saturday.
Pele — one of the greatest footballers of all time if not the greatest — was admitted to hospital on Tuesday to re-evaluate his cancer treatment.
He had a tumor removed from his colon in September 2021 and has been receiving hospital care on a regular basis.
"He is still undergoing treatment and remains in stable condition," the medical staff said.
Medical staff at Sao Paulo's Albert Einstein Hospital said Pele, 82, has also responded well to treatment for a respiratory infection diagnosed this week and his condition has not worsened in the last 24 hours.
The latest medical note came after newspaper Folha de S.Paulo reported earlier in the day that Pele — whose full name is Edson Arantes do Nascimento — had been receiving palliative care after chemotherapy stopped having the expected results.
His manager, family members and the hospital have not confirmed that information.
Pele won the World Cup with Brazil three times, in 1958, 1962 and 1970 — a feat no other player has achieved. He is the all-time leading goalscorer for Brazil, with 77 goals in 92 games.
Messages of support came in from players and fans at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
French striker Kylian Mbappe was among star footballers of the current age tweeted his support, "Pray for the King".

Yep, was not sure about Arnold coming into the world cup but kudos to him & ALL of the players. We had one costly error but apart from that we made Argentina sweat for 97 mins. Can't believe how well we played & in particular defended against the No. 3 team - despite their very obvious "ohh I've been felled by an Aussie player, I need a free kick" mentality. There were two quality goals, one from each side & the decider was but for a costly error. Argentina got lucky, that was the difference.

So Lionel Messi and his team go through to the last eight of the World Cup.
It sets up a mouthwatering match-up between La Albiceleste and The Netherlands - who earlier this morning ended the United States' run in the tournament with a 3-1 win.
The quarter-final, which will be played at Lusail Stadium, will begin at 6am AEDT next Saturday.
'We took it right to the end' - Harry Souttar speaks

Harry Souttar, who won by simply making it to the World Cup after a bad knee injury took him out for most of the preamble to this tournament, speaks to SBS.
He says he can't really tell us what he's feeling on TV.
Just really gutted for the lads. I think you seen how much it means to us.How much effort we put in. Yeah, we took it right to the end. What can I say, they're a world class team. Simple as that.
They've got world class players that can turn it on an instant, like you seen with the first goal. We're gutted. We're so disappointed. But I think we can be proud of ourselves and the journey that we've had.
Some stats from Australia - Argentina

Argentina dominated the game from an attacking standpoint, with 14 shots on goal to five, and five shots on target to just one for Australia.
As could be expected, La Albiceleste had 61 per cent of possession to 39 per cent for Australia.
The Socceroos did have three corners to one from Argentina, a reflection of Australia's main avenue to goal being set pieces.

I have to be very proud of the players. You know, we played against the number three in the world. And the first goal was just from Messi was a quality goal. The mistake cost us.
Yeah look, I just hope that everyone back in Australia really respects what we've done and are proud of us as well. We took it to them. I felt that we finished off well. We had a great chance at the end there to equalise. I've got to be very, very proud of the boys. Just so grateful at the effort they've put in for me.
A sad but sanguine Graham Arnold speaking to SBS, paying credit where it's due - the Socceroos had to face a genuine superstar, and he and others made them pay for their mistakes.
But this team has done its utmost, and they've left nothing on the table.
The future for Graham Arnold?

Let's take a step back for a moment and give props to Socceroos coach Graham Arnold.
The man has had more than his share of critics in the job, but his team gave their all in four World Cup games, made it to the last 16 for only the second time in Australian history.
They managed two wins and had two clean sheets, and gave fans more than a few moments to savour.
Given some of his comments - to ABC's own Samantha Lewis and other reporters in Qatar - you get the feeling that this is the end of an era for Arnold.
If so, he has set things up for his successor, with a number of positives. Think of the experience that Garang Kuol and others will have over the next four-year cycle. There will be change, there always is.
But Arnold deserves credit for what's happened in Qatar and before.

Clive's clearly a casual football watcher. We just went toe to toe with one of the best teams in the world and played out of our skins. Is there a gulf in class? Of course. But we played well above expectations and Australian football can build from this.

Heartbreaker for Australia

Good grief that was a tense match - and you cannot fault Australia's effort.
But there is a reason why Argentina are Copa America champions and two-time World Cup champions.
They take their chances - even if Lautaro Martinez would be sighing with relief that his misses didn't bite Argentina.
Australia's goal had a bit of luck to it, but fair dues to Graham Arnold's men - they didn't put their heads down when they went 2-0 behind.
Mat Ryan's error was unfortunate, but he put everything on the line with some great saves late on.
The quarter-finals might have been a step too far, but kudos for the Socceroos, who managed a goal in every game and pushed Argentina to the limit.
