World Cup 2018 news LIVE: Reaction to Brazil vs Mexico and Spain's penalty shootout exit

The 2018 World Cup is well underway in Russia.

It’s day 18 and the third batch of last-16 fixtures take place after an action-packed Sunday, which saw not one but two penalty shootouts decide the sides that will compete in the third quarter-final. Russia pulled off the shock of the tournament as they sent Spain crashing out, before Croatia just about held their nerve to eliminate Denmark.

Today’s action features five-time world champions Brazil as they take on Mexico in the day’s early kick-off in Samara, with Belgium and Japan playing out the evening match in Rostov-on-Don, with the winners due to meet each other in the second quarter-final at the end of the week.

We will have all the latest news, views, pictures and video direct from Russia throughout the day as we pick up the pace at the biggest football tournament in the world.

Gareth Southgate has been talking since England have touched down in Moscow ahead of their clash against Colombia tomorrow evening and he's in good spirits.

Even making jokes about Fabian Delph who's flown home for the birth of his third child.

We've got a range of writers on this years World Cup but how often do you hear from Russell Brand on football?

Well, here's your chance to do so!

16:27
BIG goal.
16:22
Our man on the ground isn't too impressed with Willian despite the goal.

Agree?

SECOND HALF UNDERWAY
15:45
HALF TIME: BRAZIL 0-0 MEXICO
15:38
We're not looking at Hernandez' hair anymore!
15:37
We're 10 minutes from half time here in Samara and somehow it's still Brazil 0-0 Mexico.

Both sides have looked full of energy and skill going forward but haven't quite had the killer touch in the striking department.

Ochoa has had to make the saves but they we're relatively comfortable ones.

Still, there's certainly a good flow to the game and surely...goals to come soon!

(Hopefully no commentator's curse.)

Follow all the rest of the action here:

14:53
Anyway, we're 10 minutes from kick off here in Samara with Brazil belting out the first anthem of the day.
14:44
Meanwhile, Mohamed Salah appears happy.

It may be because he's just signed a new long term deal with Liverpool, or perhaps it's because Sergio Ramos has followed him out of the World Cup.

Either way, happy Salah.
14:29
I've got them in the sweepstakes...
14:21
TV's best commentary duo at this year's World Cup are ready for the first game on day 19.
