Jordan Henderson has paid tribute to his “brilliant” international team-mates after England recovered from his missed penalty to beat Colombia 4-3 in a dramatic shootout.
Things looked set to go pear-shaped when Henderson's penalty was saved, only for Mateus Uribe's spot-kick to rattle the bar and goalkeeper Jordan Pickford to deny Carlos Bacca.
Eric Dier then kept his composure in the Spartak Stadium cauldron, propelling the Three Lions to a famous 4-3 shootout win after it ended 1-1 after 90 minutes and extra time.
And afterwards Liverpool skipper Henderson was full of praise for his team-mates.
“I felt we controlled the game before they got an equaliser from the set-piece at the end which was disappointing, but you have to expect that in the World Cup,” Henderson said. “We came back and dug in but it went to penalties and thankfully we came through.
“We have been practicing them for a while now and the manager picked the five that he wanted. Unfortunately, I didn't score but the other lads were brilliant, especially Jordan (Pickford) for making the save and Eric (Dier) handing us the win.
“We showed a real togetherness tonight in a difficult game.”
