Fifa has opened an investigation over alleged homophobic chants made by Mexico fans during their 1-0 victory over Germany on Sunday.
Mexico supporters have a controversial long-held song aimed towards goalkeepers taking goal-kicks which gay rights groups argue is homophobic because it uses the slur puto.
The Mexican Football Federation was fined during World Cup qualifying for the same reason and has appealed to fans to refrain from using the chant.
It had been hoped supporters would adapt the lyrics to sing ‘Putin’ during the World Cup in Russia, but it was reportedly heard several times during the game at the Luzhniki Stadium.
