In the twenty third minute, Milner puts in another great cross, this time it's a wonderful curling cross into the space onto the edge of the six-yard box which Jermain Defoe sprints into and leaps to connect firmly with the ball. Just two minutes after the goal, Milner and Defoe combine again but this time they are denied by Slovenia keeper Samir Handanovic who bravely dives at the feet of Jermain Defoe and punches the ball clear. England have really got the bit between their teeth following the goal and they really shot have doubled their lead on the half hour mark. Handanovic in the Slovenian goal, who is having an inspired game, parries a Defoe blaster from 12 yards and the ball falls to Rooney. He turns and slots the ball though to Stevie G in the middle who strokes the ball towards the far corner... Photograph: Tom Jenkins

...but Handanovic leaps to his left to make a wonderful save and then snaffles up the ball after it squirms from his grasp and trickles towards the goal a la Robert Green. The England captain can't believe it

After a tense final 20 minutes when Slovenia created a number of half chances which England did well to defend, the final whistle goes and the Three Lions are though to the knockout round. As the US won 1-0 in injury time, that means that Slovenia are out and the Americans win the group
