World Book Day 2020: Manchester's best costume creations

After weeks of planning and preparation World Book Day finally arrived today and Manchester's pupils didn't disappoint.

Thousands of children have been dressing up as their favourite book characters for schools, nurseries and playgroups - and even the teachers have been joining in the fun.

From Matildas and Mary Poppins to witches and Where's Wallys, Manchester's parents have excelled themselves for the event, which is this year celebrating its 23rd anniversary.

One of our favourites (main image) is of April Prendergast's daughter Rosie, from Edgworth Primary School, in Turton, Bolton, as the very happy Little Miss Sunshine.

It was no easy task for April, who made the costume with a 36-inch balloon, then papier mache made from flour, water PVA glue and newspapers.

She then used yellow spray paint and black marker pen, before cutting out the holes for the body, head, arms and legs.

We asked you to share your pictures with us and they've been coming in thick and fast.

Even the teachers have been getting in on the act, including Tyldesley Primary School's Mr Brown, pictured here as Violet Beauregarde from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

If you've got a photo to share then post it in the comments on our Manchester Family Facebook page here.

Tell us what character your child has dressed as and, if you're happy to share the information, then don't forget to tell us where your child is from and the name of their nursery or school.
